I ordered some of the DC Archive Editioins off of Overstock.com last week and they arrived today. In general their Archive Editions are $27.99 (some are around $33) and they charge a flat shipping fee of $2.95 regardless of how many you buy.

If you search for "dc archive" and browse the results, you will see them. They've got quite a few. Superman, JLA, Legion, Supergirl, Doom Patrol, Green Lantern, Flash, Sprit, Mad, World's Finest, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc. The tricky part is that the item descriptions don't specify the volume number. In the case of series with only one volume published, it's obvious. And you may be able to guess which volume they're selling from the editor information or the price comparison to Amazon. Before I ordered, I e-mailed them for more information on specific books as to which volumes they were, but got a reply back saying they didn't have a way to tell since they were stored in the warehouse. As flimsy as that excuse was, I decided to go ahead and take a chance and order some.

I got Supergirl Volume 1, Doom Patrol Volume 1, and The Atom Volume 1 for $27.99 each. They listed three different Green Lantern Volumes, 2 of which were $27.99 and the other $32.69. Since I didn't have any of the GL Archives I went ahead and ordered all three of those. Luckily, when they arrived today, I got volumes 1-3 of GL.

Unfortunately I can't tell which book corresponds to which Overstock item number, but I am just guessing that the slightly more expensive one was Volume 1. However looking at their site now, I don't even see the GL for $32.69, they're all priced $27.99.

A friend of mine ordered three Legion of Super-heroes archives from Overstock and did get two copies of Volume 1, even though he ordered using three different item numbers, so buyer beware. The other was LOSH Vol 10, which I've read has some quality control problems (though I think his copy was ok). He also got some JLA Archives there and received Vol 6, another one that has historically had QC problems. He didn't mention finding anything wrong with either of them however.

It is a bit of a crapshoot with some of these books but the price makes it an attractive deal in my opinion. The cheap shipping is nice too. I got six Archives shipped for $2.95, which is hard to beat. They're all brand new and still in the shrink wrap too, these aren't used books.

Anyway, maybe this will help some of the other price concscious Archive collectors out there.

In my opinion, avoid Overstock like the plague. My experience was quite the opposite of AstronautJones. I orderd quite a few archives on there and was extremely disappointed. First, you cannot see the information as to which archive you are ordering, except for the title, which really limits you. It really is a crap shoot. Secondly, my Archives were anything but pristine. I had some that had massive spine damage, cuts in the cover and one that look like it had been placed in a sunlight window for years! I think Overstock gets all the reject Archives that comic stores can't sell. They call it Overstock for a reason! In my experience, I would avoid Overstock unless you want to throw your money down the drain.

Thanks for the tip, Astronaut Jones. I went to the Overstock.com site and ordered 8 archives from runs that I haven't started yet (1 WF; 4 Spirit & 3 JLA). The price is great, and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes.....I'll post the results!

It's funny how things like "Volume 2" aren't considered part of the title. You'd think the possibility of confusion would occur to whoever types these things in right away.

I did a search on Superman and found lots of items listed twice with different catalog numbers. Also, a VHS tape of Fliesher cartoons listed George Reeves as a cast member, and the Filmation cartoons listed Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder.

I think that they get stock in at the wharehouse, and it is rapidly cataloged by people that don't really know the stuff. They probably look of movie casts on the Internet Movie Database, and don't look at the information very carefully.

My eight archives shipped last Friday from Overstock.com in Illinois and arrived on Tuesday (not bad for only $2.95 USPS Media Mail.

The four listed Spirit Volumes that arrived were 1, 4, 5 & 8. The three listed JLA volumes were 1, 5 & 6. I also received Worlds Finest 1. All books were new and in great shape. Only Spirit 4 was not shrink-wrapped. WF 1 was double-shrinked-wrapped to include the caption correction sticker for page 12.

I was very pleased with the transaction and thrilled to get these archives for $27.95. It gave me a chance/reason to jump-start on The Spirit Archives -- and they ARE great!

I have ordered 12 more (2 more Spirits, 2 more JLA, WF 2, 2 Plastic Man, 2 Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Black Canary, New Teen Titans). I have also seen the Mad Archives listed on occasion, and will buy that when it pops up again.

One of the Spirit books was actually released without any shrinkwrapping originally. I think it was that one.

A while back there was another thread that mentioned places that sold archive volumes at great prices. Can anyone shed light on this? Overstock seems like too much of a crap shoot. Thanks!

Other Internet vendors with good prices are alldirect.com (typical price $30) and booksamillion.com (typical price $33 if you buy a $5 membership). I've used both vendors several times, and have never had a problem. Alldirect does not provide much info about the title (though it sometimes lists the volume number), but you can search by the ISBN. The one annoying thing about Alldirect is that it is difficult to track the status of your order.

I have not had any problems with alldirect and tracking orders. There is the 2-3 day gap between confirmation of receipt of the order and confirmation of shipping, but that isn't much different from other internet vendors, and my orders are sent out Fed Ex ground, so I can track them when shipped.

Received my Overstock order over the weekend. Both books looked new and still sealed. The 2 books cost me about $55.

I've seen some bargain there too, but unfortunately they only ship to US addresses.

I ordered T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents Archives Vol. 1 today. Even if there is spine damage/discoloration, for only $27.99 that is a real bargain.

I am pleased to report that over the past month ,I have successfully purchased 27 archives in new, excellent condition, using Overstock.com. They were all shrink-wrapped (except for Spirit 4 -- which apparently was the lone archive to never be shrink-wrapped). The S&H was inexpensive and has a convenient USPS tracking feature (What mail stop are my archives at right NOW, internet?)

The caveat is that they don't list Volume numbers, so you have to do some detective work and take a leap of faith to order some things. It was perfect for me in some cases, as I didn't have any Spirit, Justice League or Plastic Man volumes -- so I ordered all they had, and they were all unique volumes. Almost all were $27.99. A few volumes were $33.

If it's useful to help you decode the possibilities, here's what I got:

Spirit 1-9
Justice League 1,4,5,6,7
Plastic Man 2,3,4
Wonder Woman 2,3
Worlds Finest 1,2
Shazam 3
Superman 5
Batman 5
Black Canary
Supergirl 1
New Teen Titans 1

Their inventory seems to refresh each week on Wednesday or Thursday.

I am eyeing the Golden Age Flash that popped up today, and am hoping the the Mad Archives reappear soon.

Yes, some books appear and disappear from stock quite quickly, and this is one of them. GA Flash popped up for a day or two a few weeks ago and I ordered it. It was no longer listed on their site the next day. This is the first time I've seen it on their site since then. I also got the Hawkman archives at the same time, and it seems to appear and disappear quite a bit too. Doom Patrol was gone for a while but it's back and has stayed there pretty consistently, at least so far as I've paid attention. They also list 4 Plastic Man archives right now, so it looks like they've added one more since you ordered yours.

I also noticed that they already have the Dynamic Duo archives for $32.69. http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PROFRAME&PROD_ID=419162

I've also got 6 more archives on order from them: Starman, New Teen Titans, Blackhawk, Sgt. Rock, and 2 World's Finest. They should be here in a day or two.

Overstock.com now has cover art graphics on ~50% of their listed archives. So the uncertainty of "Which Volume Is It?" is being addressed. This is clearly becoming the best way to buy archives on a budget. Quick delivery, too!

I received my 3 "War Archives" from them this past weekend, plus one Spirit Archive (#7). Of course the Spirit was a stab in the dark, as far as which volume I would get, but since I didn't have any I wasn't worried.

The service and delivery was VERY quick and VERY good. Definitely the route to go, IMHO.

This sounds worthwhile. So far I've only gotten Spirit Archives vol. 1 and have been looking for a deal for the rest of the volumes.

How was the packaging? Every time I've ever received a package in the mail, it's been totally beaten up, so durable packaging is key for me.

This is the way to go. My edition arrived shrink-wrapped. I always said "If I can find it for half off, I'll get it". Never thinking I would. $27.99 is a terrific price.

For those of you who have ordered the Archives on overstock.com, could you leave reviews on the pages so you can list which volumes they are?

I looks like you can track the individual books by the Catalog # to get back to them.
